haspa Hamburg Marathon

April 26, 2026
Hamburg, Germany
42.195 km40m ↑

Water defines Hamburg, and it defines this race. You ran the Alster. You ran the Elbe. You cut through the red-brick lanes of the Speicherstadt with the canal reflections catching the April morning light. A Hamburg Marathon finisher poster earns its place on a wall precisely because this course reads unlike any other in northern Europe — two distinct bodies of water, one UNESCO district, and a riverfront that most visitors never see from eye level at race pace.

haspa Hamburg Marathon at a glance

  • Course profile: Flat — roughly 80 metres of cumulative elevation over the full 42.195 km
  • Signature route: Loops past the Inner and Outer Alster lakes, through the Speicherstadt warehouse district, and along the Elbe with the Elbphilharmonie in view
  • Race date: Late April, typically the last Sunday of the month
  • Field size: 15,000–20,000 finishers; open registration — no ballot required
  • Cultural note: One of Germany's oldest city marathons, first held in 1986, with a devoted returning-runner rate that reflects how well the city treats race day

The course

The race starts and finishes at the Congress Center Hamburg, a few hundred metres from the Inner Alster lake. The early kilometres feel generous — wide roads, the city not yet fully awake, the flat lakeside path giving everyone room to settle in. By around 5K you are tracing the Alster's eastern edge, the lake opening to your left. On a clear April morning the water mirrors the sky in a way that is either calming or completely distracting depending on how your legs feel.

The mid-race section is where Hamburg earns its reputation. The route drops into HafenCity and through the narrow brick passages of the Speicherstadt — the 19th-century warehouse complex UNESCO listed in 2015. The cobblestones last only a few hundred metres, but they wake you up. Emerging onto the Elbe waterfront around kilometre 26, with the copper curves of the Elbphilharmonie ahead and the river wide to your right, is the moment most runners remember longest. The route shape — water appearing on three sides at different points — is exactly what makes a custom route map of this race so immediately legible: the Alster loop to the north, the Elbe sweep to the south, and the red-brick grid threading the two together.

The final stretch pulls back inland toward the CCH. There is no hill waiting at the end; the course stays honest and flat through to the finish. The crowd thins slightly after the waterfront, so the last kilometres are yours to run at your own pace, on your own terms.

The haspa Hamburg Marathon is a quiet achiever on the European spring calendar — not a World Major, not a lottery, but a race that earns genuine loyalty from the runners who come back to it year after year. makemap lets you turn the GPS data from your watch into a finisher poster that holds the exact shape of that Alster-Speicherstadt-Elbe arc — the route that makes Hamburg immediately recognisable, even printed small.
